WORKPLAN

The POEMS consortium will work its way up from subjective measures and low-level psychophysics through behavioral and physiological measures up to high-level tasks and VE with lean, elegant ego-motion simulation. The work plan, as described below, is divided into work packages and work tasks in such a way that it allows a problem-solving procedure. Furthermore, it includes a final evaluation/implementation work package to ensure that the results obtained are validated. The work plan is organized so as to meet the previously described short term and long term objectives by working along the following order:

  • Set up missing software and hardware for basic multimodal VR systems at both partners' labs,

  • Develop multi-level methods for measurement of spatial presence and perceived ego-motion, which includes the sub-steps:

    • Develop novel methods for subjective (introspective) evaluation of spatial presence and perceived ego-motion,

    • Develop multimodal psychophysics measurement methods for quantifying spatial presence and perceived ego-motion,

    • Develop physiological and behavioral measurement methods for quantifying spatial presence and perceived ego-motion,

  • Develop a theory/model of multimodal cue integration in virtual environments based on these multi-level measurements,

  • Establish interface metaphors and real world-VE transitions that enhance the sense of ego-motion and spatial presence in VE,

  • Verify the theory/model using high-level experiments.
